Rolling Acid is a celebration of free reign and contradiction. Helmed by Sonja Xiao Long (Creative Director), and Dutch artist Mr. Pong Pong, the label represents the innate conflict between the commercial and conceptual.
Long, founder of China’s multi-brand concept institution ALTER, and Mr. Pong Pong, with a background in contemporary art, come from vastly different strokes but their teaming up strikes a balance resulting in a “walking canvas”. Young, playful yet subversive.
What’s raw is posh, what’s expressive is imperfect.
Though heavily inspired by the subculture of the 1960s and 70s, the designers still add plenty of contemporary references into the mix. The separation line drawn between past and future represents the push and pull that is inherent to their OG spirit, mixing the feminine and masculine, the refined and organic.
Rolling Acid is a visually impactful brand, with striking and conceptual aesthetics catering to the bold and “beautiful” only. Nevertheless, despite a palpable pow in terms of design, concept, and visuals, there is an ease and subtlety about the collections that inject an air of harmony into this otherwise disruptive label.
AW18: INNER CITY. The collection draws inspiration from rhythm, the rhythm of music. Behind the music, then, hides an implicit story narrative brimming with symbolic color emotions. People’s lives are about exploring, exploring their surroundings, exploring the unknown.
“My Body Is My Temple”. The embedded AW18 concept of the “Inner World” intends to awaken the resonance within people’s hearts, to slow down their pace, and to explore the own inner world.
AW19: Electronic Love. The collection offers retro office and futuristic styles of the 1990s. Additionally, the designer duo was inspired by office supplies such as telephones, printers, and hard drives: the 101 office’s dull black and white aesthetic, the ashy grey tones of daily monotony, the unpacked keyboard lines and one flickering Windows logo.
Surreal, pulsating, subtle, industrial. The quartet of hints embodies the highlights of the AW19 work.
SS20: The World is Born Before My Eyes. The collection tells the story of how one careless fashion brand looks at the problematic sides of the world, using details and elements to objectify the key elements. The designer team uses a pistol diagram print pasted across the transparent fabric; behind the studded curtains loom the words “Xiao Mi Mi”(“little boobies” in Mandarin Chinese), urging all wearers every-body as is.

As proven by the subtle garter line that hides, like a red thread, across all SS20 garment categories, the brand reasons that femininity and masculinity… Shall be genderless.
