Who?
Shenzhen-native and Shanghai-resident designer Angel Chen back in 2014 graduated from Central Saint Martins, London, and that very same year founded her eponymous brand ANGEL CHEN.
Chen’s wildly colorful designs combine contrasting fabrics and textures with eye-catching embroidery to create whimsical, funk-a-delish, free-spirited garments. She especially employs her fine needlework to embroider creatures from Chinese folklore.

What?
Invariably incorporating a wonderful nudge to the most fantastical creations (or creatures, dragons included) Chinese culture has on offer, this pioneering independent brand is a unique insight into a color palette that cleverly blends East and West aesthetics.
And unmistakably one of the most-watched China Fashion labels today.

ANGEL CHEN, SS20
The label’s SS20 collection found itself drawing inspiration from the 1937 “Sheena, Queen of The Jungle” comic, reflecting a spectacle of soft fluorescents, heroic courage, python prints, and female perseverance onto FROW eyewear. The fabric of choice, in keeping with the “unusual” mantra, was Dyneema Composite. A lightweight, waterproof, and wear-resistant material from Sweden.
Chen has whipped up several outlandish custom garments for influential pop culture figures like Chris Lee, Kris Wu Fan Bingbing, and Charli XCX.

When?
In 2016, Chen made it onto the coveted Forbes “30 Under 30” list of successful young talents.
From its AW17 collection onwards, the brand has released its latest collections on the official schedule of Milan Fashion Week.
ANGEL CHEN in July 2018 won the International Wool Mark Prize — Asia Edition.
Chen in 2019, aside from joining hands with Urban Outfitters, became the first-ever Chinese designer to collaborate with H&M, producing a 45-piece capsule collection released to global audiences in September 2019.

The 2020 Netflix reality production “Next in Fashion” saw Chen enter as a participant and ending up as the partner in creative crime to (spoiler alert) eventual winning designer Minju Kim.
In March 2020, the ANGEL CHEN label, too, featured in the Labelhood Livestream lineup as a subsection of Shanghai Cloud Fashion Week AW20.

Where?
The brand is currently available across more than 70 well-known retail outlets around the globe, including LUISAVIAROMA, H. LORENZO, GALERIES LAFAYETTE, SELFRIDGES, LENCAR, LABELHOOD, and BEAMS.
The collections are also buy-able online — Lane Crawford, anyone? — including from the brand website directly.

Why?
Chen works extremely hard to bring a sense of local community and culture to her work, a feat of unadulterated dedication experienced throughout her body of work.
As well as including traditional Chinese stories, from that ghastly ghostly tale to the urban animalistic legend, in her displays of design, this createuse is also committed to using sustainable fabrics harvested from natural resources.

Chen’s vision of fusion is one ever-exclusive, yet always inclusive. Her fashions provide in-depth insights into one designer’s connections to a vast diversity of cultures and aesthetics found in her homeland.
Redefined and redefining.
