Who?
Shimo Zhou and Une Yea in 2015 established their brand STAFFONLY Studio (STAFFONLY). The brand focuses on establishing collections based on a sharp concept and the use of innovative materials.
Yea is a Beijing-born designer who attended the capital’s Tsinghua University before moving on to obtaining an MA in Accessory Design from the Royal College of Arts in London. Her research interests lie generally in the area of creating provoking silhouettes and breaking borders between fashion and accessories design, all the while combining sound and mechanics plus throwing in some ever-evolving new concepts and techniques.

Born and raised in Shenzhen, Zhou grew up in one of the most rapidly developing and dynamic cities in China. She accomplished her studies in menswear design at the London College of Fashion in 2015 and had since 2010 been gaining work experience with Alexander McQueen, Erdem, and Tom Ford during her BA studies.
Zhou’s aesthetic offers an abstract metaphor of poetry and logic with interpretations of fashion that generally find themselves lingering in the area of beauty that hides from any type of systematic and philosophical form or restriction. Zhou is all about modernizing heritage and constructing methodology into a graphic ornament, mingling with a passion for experimental textile and color palettes.

A juxtapose between the geeky and poetic atmosphere is what these Shanghai-based designer dudettes are on the prowl for, a new attitude and a revolution in traditional menswear. The STAFFONLY dude always exudes an abundance of curiosity, a sense of humor, and the willingness to break boundaries wherever he goes.

STAFFONLY illustrates unlimited imagination beyond the word itself. The designs focus on the logic hidden from the appearance and the sense of communal recognition from the groups and communities. The development of a fresh concept and identity is the essential first step in the symbiotic design process.
This, in turn, leads to a series of curated materials and color choices for an ironic and provocative take on male mode mayhem(lines) enhanced by functional and sculpted silhouettes.
The brand samples are produced in-house and thus the designers can maintain 100 percent control over their evolution. The subsequent collections are then produced in a factory in Shanghai.
When?
Toray Industries, Inc., in April, announced STAFFONLY as the winner of the 2020 Ultrasuede x Labelhood Innovation Award.
STAFFONLY has developed a capsule collection using the high-tech microfiber Ultrasuede: the soft but structured suede-like surface carries a special matte texture, with the laser-cut sharp but soft edge overlaps together, which even soften the garments’ silhouettes more in dynamic and static mode.
The new capsule collection is slated to hit stores in the summer of 2020.
