Performance artist Chen Tianzhuo’s ( 陈天灼 in Chinese) established multidisciplinary troupe Asian Dope Boys’ design pattern stars a limited edition t-shirt available exclusively online at Innersect from 7 March onwards. In addition to the Boiler Room Club 20/20 main line of core club-ready coolness.
Using their often ambitious, beautiful yet bizarre work as a reference, their transgressive shows and live dance performances, raves, and record label have been known to take inspiration from Chinese religion, Butoh, vogueing… And now enter the world of Temper Tantrum-worthy Tee fashion.
Raw, uncut and homemade, China’s subculture gets fashionably lit. Ready for it?
Boiler Room since 2018 has launched 4:3 by Boiler Room; System, an initiative created in partnership with Gaika that uncovers and celebrates the impact of migration on music: borderless cultural movements that grow from underground subcultures to worldwide mainstream success; Contemporary Scenes, exploring underground collectives, artists and subcultures from across the world; and Low Heat, a series of parties and films celebrating new artists.
The time has now come to subculturally curate that wardrobe.
About Asian Dope Boys
Founder Chen was born in Beijing (1985) and studied for his Bachelor of Fine Arts from 2007 until 2009 at prestigious Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design and went on to get his master’s degree from Chelsea College of Art in 2010.
Chen’s response to pop culture and his integration of the familiar is a larger-than-life combination of the fantastical and nightmarish. For Chen, pop culture is a full-on belief system: the ethos of rap is treated like something sacred, and religious totems like Adaha (an androgynous symbol from Buddhism) mixed up with commercially made dragon bongs, freemason eyes and the innards of inflatable animals.
“My work is based on my personal interests and experiences in those pop culture or subculture scenes — both in urban China and in the UK — through all the events and parties I was involved in,” Chen explains, “I was keen to make my work reflect the life and cultural times of my [post-80] generation, and share the same experiences with them.”
By taking characters from cartoons or pop culture iconography and absorb these into his newly invented cult symbol system, Chen is trying to create a tension between pop culture and religion.
